How to Balance lifepo4 batteries connected in series:

Linking 12-volt batteries in series provides a convenient method for constructing higher voltage battery systems, such as 24V, 36V, and 48V. It is advisable to balance the batteries in series, also referred to as voltage matching, by charging each battery individually prior to linking.

Benefits of balancing batteries before connecting the system:

  • The total capacity of the system will be higher. This means more runtime for your golf cart, trolling motor, solar battery bank, or whatever you are powering.
  • The stress of discharging to empty is a primary contributor to reduced battery lifespan. By balancing the voltage across the series-linked battery configuration, the stress is evenly distributed among all batteries, thus extending the lifespan of each individual unit.

In order to optimize performance and maximize battery lifespan, it is recommended that customers balance their batteries prior to connecting them in series. This practice is essential to achieve maximum system output and longevity.

How to balance batteries before connecting in series:

  • For optimal results, use a 12V LiFePO4 compatible charger to individually charge each battery unit until it reaches 100% state of charge. The state of charge can be monitored using the Epoch Batteries app. This voltage balancing procedure should only be performed once prior to setting up the system. Subsequently, the entire system can be charged using the higher voltage charger.
  • Upon successful completion of individual battery charging, the units can be connected in series to establish a higher voltage system, such as 24V, 36V, 48V, etc. The implementation of this configuration results in a balanced battery system.

Going forward, it is recommended to employ a higher voltage LiFePO4 charger for charging the complete battery series configuration. This approach provides increased efficiency, such as charging a 48V system with a 48V LiFePO4 charger.

How often should I balance my system with this method:

  • It is advisable to perform voltage balancing procedures on batteries after extended storage periods exceeding three months or in the event of a noticeable decline in performance.
  • Annual voltage balancing of the battery units is recommended as a preventative measure to enhance the overall lifespan of the battery system.

WARNING:

DO NOT to use a higher voltage charger, such as 24V, 36V, or 48V, to charge an individual 12V battery pack.
